On the overuse of ‘lol’ and viable alternatives

So, an unnamed female and myself were discussing the blatant overuse of the acronym ‘lol’ in everday online discourse. Lol stands (obviously) for laughing out loud, and is meant to be used when, in fact, one is laughing out loud. Instead, a lot of people seem to use ‘lol’ as a reaction to everything from a dumb joke, to a witty observation, and are not actually laughing out loud.

As these bogus ‘lol’s undermine the credibility of a remark actually deserving a ‘lol,’ this female and I have come up with some acroynm alternatives for use where a illegitimate ‘lol’ was used previously. They are:

1. kol (kind of lauging)
2. li (laughing inside)
3. ls (laughing silently)
4. fbnl (funny, but not laughing)
5. f (funny)

I have created a thread with a poll to sound off on this problem, and to vote on some appropriate’lol’ alternatives. Together, we can curb this blatant threat to acronym integrity!
