Fav H. L. Mencken Quotes

October 16, 2003

So today is devoted to H.L. Mencken, one of my favorite literary figures in the history of the world. He was known for being very articulate, cynical, and outspoken (like me). Anyway, on to my favorite Mencken quotes:

-The trouble with Communism is the Communists, just as the trouble with Christianity is the Christians.

-A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.

-Faith may be defined briefly as an illogical belief in the occurrence of the improbable.

-school teachers, taking them by and large, are probably the most ignorant and stupid class of men in the whole group of menial workers.

Giving every man a vote has no more made men wise and free than Christianity has made them good.

-Life may not be exactly pleasant, but it is at least not dull. Heave yourself into Hell today, and you may miss, tomorrow or next day, another Scopes trial, or another War to End War, or perchance a rich and buxom widow with all her first husband’s clothes. There are always more Hardings hatching. I advocate hanging on as long as possible.
